Celtic Garden 2017
5th Class are working with Monasterboice Tidy Towns Committee to create a Celtic Garden for our community at Drumshallon Forge. This is part of the Louth County Council Schools’ Gardens Competition.
The name of our ecotribe is Harestown Hawthorns
Our motto is “Nature Creates Itself “
We have been very busy designing the garden and working on site, as well as researching Celtic art, lifestyle and customs.
Launch event will be Thursday 18th May at 1.30pm
The children will perform three Celtic rituals as part of our May Celebration:
- Tie a ribbon to our May Tree (echoing the rag tree custom)
- Place their own painted stone in the garden. (echoing the custom of cairns)
- Throw a pebble or a May blossom into our Wishing Pond. (echoing the tradition of Celtic ritual pools and holy wells)
The children will be encouraged to wear Celtic costumes. They will be performing songs, music and dance. Their research and art will be on display. We will have Celtic themed refreshments. We are liaising with Tidy Towns committee and Drumshallon Forge to find a local who will talk on the traditional May customs of our parish.

As you can see we’ve been very busy. Photos of our Work Day on Good Friday.
The children painted Celtic designs on stones to place in the garden.`
Harestown Hawthorns have been busy researching. We have been finding out all about the Celts. They had many gods and goddesses.
We painted our own bunting for our Celebration
We love our Celtic Shields Fence
We have very talented people working hard on our project. This is the edges of the Seating Circle, made from recycled wood.
We went to the Garden Centre to choose our plants.
The Harestown Hawthorns were busy this week. All of 5th Class went down to the garden on Monday and rolled our sleeves up.
